Proposed SOTA Activation – Prairie Dog Hill VK1/AC-045

Weather permitting, I plan to activate Prairie Dog Hill on the weekend of 12/13 September 2015. The summit in grid square QF44kj is over 1300 m ASL, which for the VK1 SOTA association is 2 points.  Out of interest, a 1300 metre summit in our neighbouring VK2 SOTA association is awarded 8 points.  Thank goodness for the 3 point winter bonus 🙂

VK1/AC-045 Prairie Dog Hill was included in the VK1 SOTA list on 1 February 2014, coinciding with first anniversary of SOTA in VK1. The status of the summit is ‘Not Yet Activated’.

Proposed route.  After parking the car at Orroral Valley car park the first leg is a 4.6 km walk along Cotter Hut Road heading north-west.  The second leg involves a 1.6 km scrub bash again heading north-west to the summit.    There are no known tracks to the summit and the area is well-known for heavy regrowth of wattle, tee-tree and eucalypt trees after the 2003 fire storm.   The adjacent mountains Orroral Peak, Cotter Hut Hill and the Granite Tors Ridge are heavily wooded with concealed and imposing Granite Tors.

I expect the 4.6 km walk along Cotter Hut Road will be comfortable however the 1.6 ascent will be no different to the ascent of VK1/AC-012 Orroral Peak, bloody hard!   If I make the peak in 2.5 hours, it will be worth every single activator point.  😎

Prairie Dog Hill is within the boundary of Namadgi National Park VKFF-377, Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Grid Square is QF44KJ.
