SOTABEAMS WSPRlite – 200 milliwatts VK1 to North America

I’m testing the propagation of radio signsls from my homebrew 40m OCF dipole at 8 metres above ground level (26 ft) on 20m (14 MHz), using a SOTABEAMS WSPRlite unit operating at 0.2 watts (200 milliwatts), configurable 5mW to 200 mW via supplied software.

Today, in the 3 hour period up to VK1 sunset I noticed W4HOD in Alabama, North America was receiving my 20m 200 mW signal.  What I can’t determine with a dipole antenna is the signal path, is it short or long?  My 40m OCF dipole is broadside North/South where the 0.666 element is aligned to the west. Regardless of the short or long path distance I’m pretty stoked with 15030 km @ 200 mW   🙂

I plan to leave the WSPRlite unit running for 3 days then change the unit to transmit in to a 20m horizontal rectangular loop for a further 3 days.  My homebrew 20m loop is fed with 450 ohm feed line from a homebrew Z Match as the impedance transformer.

  1. Great work Andrew! I have been playing with WSPR to evaluate and compare antennas. I can only run as low as 500mW though so great accomplishment!

    Fantastic effort, amazing how far the WSPR signal gets. Did something similar the Ultimate 3 at 250mW of into OE6MBG in Austria back on 15th Feb 2017 using 20 meters using 2 Hamsticks in a poor location, mounted on the gazebo, situated on the front balcony .
